Hokodo’s 2022 all wrapped up

The Founders

A potent cocktail of soaring inflation and Russia’s unprovoked war in Ukraine has made 2022 another turbulent year for businesses and individuals alike – and that’s before we even get to the garnish of political upheaval and the consequences of climate change.

However, it’s not all doom and gloom, and at Hokodo we think it’s important to celebrate wins and good news stories when they come our way. With that in mind, here’s a look back at some of our highlights of the past year.

We unveiled Hokodo’s brand new look

June saw the unveiling of Hokodo’s new branding – the culmination of a project lasting several months and involving company-wide collaboration. And it wasn’t just about a new logo and colour palette (although those are pretty sexy, if we may say so ourselves). The rebrand introduced a whole new set of values that every Hokodian lives by, plus revamped versions of our purpose, mission and vision that reflect the company we’ve become.

We completed a $40m Series B fundraise

Just a week after launching our new brand we had the pleasure of announcing the result of Hokodo’s latest fundraising efforts. Led by Notion Capital – a VC fund who participated in our 2021 Series A raise – the $40m round also saw investment from continental European investors Korelya Capital (FR), Mundi Ventures (ES), and Opera Tech Ventures (FR). Additional funding was sourced from our existing investors including Anthemis and Mosaic Ventures.

“We’ve been following Hokodo since the beginning and made an initial investment as part of their Series A. We’re delighted to lead their Series B and double down on our support of Hokodo,” said Patrick Norris, General Partner at Notion Capital, in a press release. “There’s a lot of excitement around B2B Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) at the moment, and rightly so because the B2B e-commerce market is at least twice as large as B2C. We concluded that the capability and maturity gap between Hokodo and their competitors is enormous. Not only are they the only provider to offer pan-European coverage, but they’re the only one owning the end-to-end value chain. As a result Hokodo is the only firm able to deliver a cutting-edge purchasing experience across the continent.”

The Hokodo team expanded (again)

Honey, I grew the team! When we wrote about our 2021 highlights this time last year, the Hokodo team capped out at 60. Today, we’re 82-strong, with employees spread across Europe. This year has seen key hires in the shape of a new VP of marketing, a head of SDR, several engineering experts and the first employees within our burgeoning legal and compliance function - there’s more, but we simply don’t have the word count to include them all.

December and January may be a quiet time for some hiring managers, but not at Hokodo. We’re currently looking to fill a number of roles across the organisation.

We onboarded a cohort of new merchants… in record time

2022 saw Hokodo’s tech, ops, marketing, sales and customer success teams collaborate on a lengthy project with the goal of improving the onboarding experience for our merchant and marketplace partners. The result? 22 new e-commerce platforms onboarded over the course of the year,a record integration time of just one week, and (most importantly) a whole raft of very happy B2B buyers benefiting from payment terms.

We entered new markets

This year, we further solidified our position as the only pan-European digital trade credit provider by expanding into another of the continent’s key markets: Spain! This strategic expansion has enabled us to help more buyers and sellers than ever before, and has also benefited our existing partners with regional divisions in Spain.

To clarify, we’re now operating in 6 countries (that account for 75% of all companies in Europe) – the UK, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and Spain.

Our success was recognised across Europe

Praise and recognition for Hokodo has been strong in 2022, and we deeply appreciate every award nomination received and every list on which we’ve been included.

It was an honour to be included among Wired’s Hottest 100 Startups in Europe and in Accel’s Fintech 100 EMEA. We’re incredibly grateful to have been nominated for the Best B2B E-commerce Partner award at this year’s CFI Awards.

Even more special was seeing the recognition received by individual Hokodians in 2022. Several members of our sales team were acknowledged by Sales Confidence and 100 Over 100 for their excellent work. Congratulations to Nasri EL-Sayegh and Grace Corby for showing exemplary leadership and to Henry Seifert and Ben Reeves for exceeding their SDR targets!

Meanwhile, our co-founder and co-CEO Louis Carbonnier was listed in TechRound’s ‘Tech Leaders of 2022’ and Frenchweb.fr’s top 100 fintech leaders who made an impact this year.

We made a name for ourselves at events

This year several members of our leadership team joined insightful panels and delivered thought-provoking sessions at events across Europe.

Back in February, Louis delivered a session at Marketplace Connect in France, while more recently, our VP of Operations, Sania Kudaibergen, travelled to Amsterdam to appear on a panel at the European Women Payments Network conference. Elsewhere, co-founder and CTO Sami Ben Hatit held a speaking engagement at Mirakl’s Tech Day while Raphaël Caruso – our Director of Strategic Projects and Partnerships – was invited to present at Anthemis Group’s Embedded Finance Showcase. Rounding out the year, our VP of Marketing Lucy Heavens moderated a panel discussion on talent acquisition in the era of mayhem earlier in December.

We celebrated our achievements at our bi-annual offsites

In March, we brought the Hokodo team together for a two-day offsite held at the British Library in London. Then, in October, our team reunited once again for a three-day trip to Mallorca. Both these offsites gave us the opportunity to:

  • Align on our strategic goals 🚀
  • Develop cross-functional ways of working ✅
  • Hone our value proposition 🎯
  • Build trust and relationships 🤝
  • Have fun as a team! ☀️

We made our TV debut

2022 saw Hokodo reach new levels of recognition in the media, big stories like our Series B fundraise were picked up by outlets like Pymnts, Sifted and AltFi, while several members of the team landed guest spots on industry-focused podcasts. We even managed to get our first (and second!) TV appearances. But we’re not letting the fame go to our heads yet.

Thank you to everyone – colleagues, partners, customers and investors – who have made 2022 a successful year for Hokodo. We can’t wait to show you what we have in store for the new year.
